Cooper in the Community

How Educational and Medical Institutions are Revitalizing Their Communities

Throughout the country and especially throughout our region, educational and medical institutions play a leading role in economic development, investing billions of dollars to weave themselves into their communities, bringing jobs, housing, retail shops and other amenities to often-underserved areas.

On Thursday, June 19, 2008, the Urban Land Institute of Philadelphia invited representatives from educational and medical organizations currently involved in urban development projects to speak about their success and the challenges they've faced. Among the speakers were Paul Sehnert, Director of Real Estate at The University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Donald Farish, President of Rowan University and Jack Shannon, President and Chief Executive Officer of East Baltimore Development, Inc. (including Johns Hopkins University and Hospital.) and George E. Norcross, III, Chairman, Board of Trustees at Cooper University Hospital.

Mr. Norcross discussed Cooper's $500 million Health Sciences Campus development and provided insight into the hospital's role in improving the surrounding neighborhood. From the new parking garage and forthcoming medical school building to the creation of parks and an emphasis on public safety, he stressed how a successful project requires a partnership with the community.
