Camden County Cancer Screening Project

The Camden County Cancer Screening Project (CCCSP) is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection (NJCEED) funded program administered by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. Since 1993, it has been based out of Cooper University Hospital.

Its main purpose is to provide free outreach, education and screening services to uninsured men and women residing in Camden County, New Jersey for breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer. Services also include diagnostic testing for screening participants with abnormalities; educational sessions provided in the community for the different cancers; outreach services providing patient navigation for persons with abnormal results; one-on-one counseling and case management services as needed; help with transportation; emotional support and follow-up post-diagnosis and treatment for those diagnosed with a malignancy.

At least 1,200 women were be screened for breast and cervical cancer, 200 men for prostate cancer and 500 persons for colorectal cancer in previous grant years.

Screenings take place daily in radiology and clinic sites dispersed throughout Camden County. It is expected that at least 100 persons will be screened monthly at the various screening sites. Persons who are eligible for screening are guided to the nearest site to them.

Persons meeting the following criteria are eligible for free screenings:

• The person must be a resident of Camden County
• The person must have an income of no more than 250% above the poverty level

In addition to the above residency and income criteria:

• For cervical cancer, any female 18 and over is eligible
• For prostate cancer, African-American males and other males with a family history who are 40 and older are eligible as well as other males age 50 and older
• For breast cancer, women 40 and older are eligible as well as women under 40 with a family history or breast abnormality or concern
• For colorectal cancer men and women 50 and older are eligible as well as persons under 50 with a family history.
