Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

IMRTIntensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), the most advanced form of external radiation available, delivers high doses of radiation directly to cancer cells in a very precise way with the accuracy of a few millimeters while sparing more of the surrounding healthy tissue. Cooper is one of a few centers in the region to offer IMRT.

IMRT uses computer-generated images to deliver tightly focused, high-dose radiation to a cancerous tumor or specific areas within the tumor. The radiation dose is designed to conform to the three-dimensional (3D) shape of the tumor by modulating—or controlling—the intensity of the radiation beam to focus a higher radiation dose to the tumor while minimizing the radiation exposure of surrounding normal tissue. 3D computed tomography images and computerized dose calculations are used to determine the best dose intensity pattern for the tumor shape.

IMRT allows higher and more effective radiation doses to be delivered safely to tumors with fewer side effects than conventional external radiation therapy techniques. IMRT can also reduce treatment side effects when lower doses are used.

Types of Cancer Treated with IMRT:

  • Prostate Cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Lymphomas
  • Gynecologic cancers (e.g., ovarian and cervical)
  • Brain Tumors
  • Sarcomas
  • Tumors in children

P3IMRT: The Clinical Solution for IMRT
P3IMRT is fully integrated with Pinnacle3® conformal 3D planning and SmartSim CT Simulation. Use the same tools and features for IMRT planning that you use for your conventional 3D planning. Create composite dose distributions combining forward and inverse IMRT treatment plans. Optimize an IMRT cone down plan based on doses already delivered to the patient.
