Dermatologic Conditions
Fat Deposits

Why do people develop fat deposits localized to certain areas?
Physiologists have described two basic body types. The android body type which is often a characteristic of male fat distribution. This body type has fat distribution more centrally, in the abdomen, chest, upper arms and neck. Although this is a typically male body type, there are some women who have it. The other body type is called gynocoid, and it is the development of fat deposits over lateral thighs and hips. Although these are two general body types, we all know that there are many more types of uneven fat distribution. Some people develop a disproportionate amount of fat on their upper arms, some on the back, hips, outer thighs, inner thighs, knees, buttocks, and abdomen. Often these are genetically determined. We can look at other members in our fathers or mothers families who have very similar fat distribution. When these areas are out of proportion with our normal body type, they are very resistant to diet and exercise. See Liposuction as treatment for excess fat.
