What should I know about scars from injury?
The most important first step is to have the wound cleaned and sutured if the wound is deep enough for this to be necessary. Following this, the area should have a dressing on it until the stitches are removed, or until it is healed completely if it was not sutured. Wounds that are allowed to dry out and scab develop worse scars. Wounds that are kept moist, have the best chance for good healing. If the scar is on the face, it should be evaluated for resurfacing within the first 2 months. In this time period we can best effect a positive change in the scar with resurfacing. Most wounds less than one year old will improve with resurfacing. Some scars may need injections, or surgical rearrangement.
