The face develops a more aged appearance for several different reasons. First the skin can become dull and lusterless from chronic sun damage or acne scaring, which leads to surface and textural changes. Second, there is loss of fatty tissues around the mouth, lips, and below the eyes, and a relative excess of fatty tissue develops around the jowls. In addition, there is a loss of bone in the lower third of the face. The constant pulling action of the muscles on the face, on a thinner skin creates lines and wrinkles.
