Dr Atabek graduated Summa Cum Laude from Catholic U. of America in 1976 with a B.S. in Engineering. He then attended the U. of Maryland School of Medicine from which he graduated in 1980. He was elected to the AOA honor medical society while in medical school.

Dr Atabek completed a general surgery residency at Westchester County Medical Center/New York Medical College in 1985. Afterwards, he did a 2 year Surgical Oncology fellowship at UMDNJ in Newark. In 1987, he started working at Cooper Hospital in the Division of General Surgery.

Dr. Atabek has Board Certification in General Surgery and belongs to several medical societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). He has coauthored 30 medical publication and has presented at national and international meetings. He was recently selected as a "Top Doctor" by New Jersey Monthly magazine and has been in "Best Doctors in America". His special interests include breast diseases, biliary and pancreatic surgery, gastric surgery, thyroid surgery, and laparoscopic surgery.
