Internal Medicine Residency Program
Conferences
Each Monday, an expert guest is invited to discuss a topic with our Chief of Medicine, Dr. Parrillo, and the medicine housestaff. Discussions are case-based, and a senior resident selects and prepares cases for review and discussion.
On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, two cases are prepared by residents for presentation and discussion by the housestaff and our program director, Dr. Rajput. Focus is on the history, differential diagnosis, work-up, and management of patients as they present. Key learning points are emphasized by the presenting residents.
Every month, a resident who was in ICU previous month prepares a case for presentation. It is an interactive discussion with residents, Dr. Rajput and Dr. Spevetz. Core teaching points are emphasized in a short didactic session at the end.
Twice a month, senior resident on Ambulatory rotation prepares interesting cases that he/she saw in outpatient office. Dr. Headly and Dr. Rajput participate in discussion with residents.
Once every month, we have a subspecialty morning report with different subspecialty every month. Resident on a subspecialty service prepares a case and subspecialty attending is invited for discussion.
On every weekday except Thursday, a noontime core curriculum conference is held. These didactic sessions cover the gamut of general medicine and subspecialty topics, and also other useful non-science topics such as the business aspect of medicine and medical ethics. Speakers include general internal medicine and subspecialty attendings, and occasionally outside attendings as well.
Every Thursday, Grand Rounds is held for the medical housestaff, fellows, and attendings. Speakers include locally and nationally known physicians who are experts in their fields.
Once a month, a senior resident presents a morbidity and mortality conference. One or two cases in which an unwanted or unexpected outcome took place are presented and reviewed. Potential mistakes are identified without identifying any individual and root cause analysis is frequently performed to improve our patient care. New policies and processes often stem from these sessions.
Monthly, a senior resident selects a new important journal article and presents the study in a structured way for review. The goal is both to gain medical knowledge from the studies themselves and to improve the residents’ skill at reading and analyzing a scientific paper.
Every Thursday morning, we discuss ~ 12-15 questions in a group with Dr. Rajput. It is a great learning experience with discussion and prepares the residents for the board exam.
In second half of internship, all interns present a case in the noon conference. Approach to patient, differential diagnoses and management aspects are discussed with Dr. Rajput and Chief Residents.
