Message from the Chief Residents

Hello, and thank you for your interest in the Cooper Internal Medicine Program. This is an exciting time to be entering the field of medicine, and an exciting time to be involved in Cooper Hospital as well.

We are located at Cooper Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, minutes from downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The population provides an amazing variety of patients, including those from the poor inner city of Camden itself as well as the more affluent suburban areas. Being the major hospital center for all of southern New Jersey, patients are also routinely flown to Cooper from other hospitals for their care, giving our residents experience with a wide variety of acutely ill patients. In addition, Cooper has a large network of outpatient offices throughout Camden County and beyond. This makes the outpatient and consulting experiences as varied and educational as the inpatient.

Cooper Hospital is in the midst of a time of growth and change. A new patient care pavilion opening in the fall of 2008 will almost double the space available for inpatient care and will include a state-of-the-art emergency department, intensive care unit, and med/surg beds. A new Electronic Health Record, replacing our current computerized ordering and lab reporting systems, incorporating our PACS radiology system, and eliminating our paper progress note charts, will be available in January 2009.

Our faculty in the Department of Medicine is wonderful. We have award-winning teaching attendings in general medicine, and many our subspecialists are nationally and world-renowned. The knowledge and commitment to education are exceptional, and our residents benefit from that. The culture at Cooper is one of friendliness and our attendings are very approachable and never hesitate to lend a hand, whether it is with a difficult case, helping with research projects, lecturing, or mentoring.

In the Medicine residency program, we are very proud of our camaraderie and friendly work environment. The culture in the entire hospital is warm and friendly, and we enjoy recruiting candidates who would fit well into this environment. We also enjoy our time out of the hospital. Residency is a busy and stressful time, so it helps to have friends who are in it together. We have a social committee which organizes monthly events including ski trips, days at amusement parks, and others.
