Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship

Pediatric Emergency Medicine FellowshipThe Department of Emergency Medicine at Cooper University Hospital offers an ACGME accredited fellowship program in pediatric emergency medicine. Positions are available for one trainee per year. Cooper University Hospital is a Level 1 Regional Trauma Center that includes the Children’s Regional Hospital. The Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine currently includes five faculty members, three of whom are fellowship trained, with board certification in pediatric emergency medicine.

This fellowship is designed to provide the trainee with the knowledge, technical skills, and clinical judgment needed to provide optimal care for all children in the setting of the emergency department. These goals are accomplished through a combination of clinical rotations, formal teaching conferences and the development of critical thinking and research skills. The fellowship is designed to prepare the board eligible or board certified pediatrician or emergency medicine physician for a career in either an academic setting or a more clinically oriented environment. Our pediatric emergency department sees approximately 15,000 children per year. The fellowship program includes exposure to a wide variety of subspecialty areas including:

  • Pediatric Critical Care
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Trauma
  • Child Physical and Sexual Abuse
  • Toxicology

Clinical responsibilities during the fellowship include 12-14 months in the pediatric emergency department. Additional clinical rotations provide exposure to subspecialty areas and areas required by the ACGME. Protected time is provided during the fellowship to allow for the development and completion of a research project that will lead to presentation at a major medical meeting and/or publication in a peer reviewed journal. The division’s ongoing research includes investigations of the use of ultrasound in the pediatric emergency department and evaluation of suspected child abuse. The Children’s Regional Hospital is a regional referral center for the Delaware Valley and regularly receives children who are transferred from other facilities in southern New Jersey..
