Plastic Surgery Residency
The Plastic Surgery Residency Program is approved for two years of residency training at Cooper University Hospital. Over the course of the two years of training, a resident can expect to be involved in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Except for two rotations to institutions in nearby Philadelphia, for burn care management (acute and chronic) at Crozer Chester Burn Center and craniofacial surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, all clinical work is at Cooper Hospital.
A full-time faculty of plastic surgeons assures the resident of close supervision when required and the opportunity for graded responsibility and independence throughout the training program, both in the operating room and in the outpatient ambulatory facility. Volunteer faculty in private practice enhance the learning experience.
There are two weekly didactic conferences discussing preoperative management of patients, morbidity and mortality review, journal reviews, and topical presentations by other faculty members at the medical center.
Cooper University Hospital is one of the major trauma centers in the state of New Jersey, covering the seven southern counties of the state. There is a Level III intensive care nursery at this institution. We also have one of the largest state-supported Craniofacial/Cleft Palate Program in New Jersey, with more than 700 active patients. A research laboratory is available adjacent to the hospital.
Applicants must have prerequisite training acceptable to the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Applicants must be eligible for full licensure in the state of New Jersey (must have completed Step III of USMLE). Applicants must apply through the San Francisco Matching Service (655 Beach Street, San Francisco, CA 94109). In addition, an application form for Graduate Medical Education at Cooper University Hospital must be completed.
The plastic surgery resident is expected to be on call every other night, but calls may be taken from home if the clinical situation warrants. The resident is allowed 2 weeks of vacation per year as well as holiday comp time and time off for meetings and exams.
