The physician experts who direct the comprehensive cardiovascular programs of the Cooper Heart Institute include cardiologists with national and international reputations.

Perry Weinstock, M.D., head of the Division of Cardiovascular Disease and director of Clinical Cardiology at Cooper is considered the regional expert in the management of complex lipid disorders. Steven Hollenberg, M.D., director of the Cooper Coronary Care Unit, has established an international reputation for his expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and research of heart failure and cardiogenic shock.

The Director of the Cooper Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia Program, Lawrence Gessman, M.D., is South Jersey’s rhythm disorder expert. A pioneer in the development of the original AED technology, Dr. Gessman was also the first South Jersey cardiologist to offer bi-ventricular pacing. Janah Aji, M.D., Director of the Cooper Cardiac Catheterization, offered the area’s first percutaneous closures of patent foreman ovales (PFOs) and atrial septal defects (ASDs). Zoltan Turi, M.D., an internationally renowned interventional cardiologist is the Director of the Cooper Vascular Center. One of the only multi-disciplinary programs in the country, he is considered a national expert in the use of stents, rather than surgery to treat carotid artery disease.

Joseph Parrillo, M.D., Chief of the Cooper Department of Medicine, and Director of the Cooper Heart Institute, provides overall leadership for all divisions within the medicine department, in addition to his internationally recognized reputation as a clinician, researcher, and educator in cardiovascular disease, heart failure, critical care medicine, shock and sepsis.
