Minimally Invasive Surgery

Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery

Dr. Dean Drezner, Head of the Division of Otolaryngology, explains the benefits of minimally invasive surgery for ear, nose and throat problems as well as head and neck cancer.

Minimally invasive head and neck procedures enable surgeons to repair ear, nose, and throat problems without damaging the patient’s appearance. Cooper surgeons use fiber-optic endoscopes, surgical microscopes, and lasers to perform many head and neck diagnostic and therapeutic procedures without a skin incision—through the ear, nose, or mouth.

Minimally invasive head and neck surgery isn’t right for all patients. Before any surgery, the Cooper surgeon will discuss the procedure, including whether to use a minimally invasive or traditional procedure, with the patient in detail.

Minimally Invasive Ear Surgery

Middle Ear and Stapes Surgery
To restore hearing lost due to otosclerosis, surgical removal of the stapes (stapedectomy) and implantation of an artificial replacement may be necessary. Other middle ear conditions, such as conductive hearing loss and fluid build-up can be also be treated surgically. Cooper surgeons use minimally invasive techniques, including lasers, to remove the stapes, reconstruct the ear drum, and drain ear fluid from the middle ear.

Sinus and Nasal Surgery

Sinus & NasalEndoscopic Sinus Surgery
Chronic or recurrent acute sinusitis is sometimes treated surgically. Cooper surgeons use endoscopy to open the sinus pathways, drain the sinuses, and relieve pain and pressure.

Computer-Guided Imaging Sinus Surgery
When the sinus anatomy is unusual or has been altered by prior surgery, sinus surgery is more complex. In these cases, Cooper surgeons use computer-guided imaging sinus surgery, which combines computed tomography scans and “real-time” infrared signal information. Computer-guided imaging surgery provides the surgeon with greater precision and enhances 3-D visualization of the sinuses.

Endoscopic Nasal Surgery
Nasal surgery is performed on the structures of the nose, septum, and turbinates to remove obstructions, correct deformities, and restore normal functioning. Cooper surgeons use fiberoptic telescopes, specially designed probes, and lasers to remove nasal obstructions, correct a deviated septum or to reduce the size of the turbinates.

Laryngeal Surgery

Endoscopic Laryngeal Surgery
Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors can affect the larynx. Surgery is often used to remove tumors in the larynx. Cooper surgeons use endoscopy and lasers to remove early-stage tumors in the larynx without incisions.
