Radiology & Outpatient Diagnostic Testing
Breast Imaging
Digital Mammograms — X-rays of the breast used to detect and diagnose breast disease. Both exams are similar in that X-rays are used to produce an image of the breast. The differences are in the way the image is recorded and viewed by the doctor. Digital images are captured electronically and viewed on a 5 mega pixel High Resolution computer screen. AVAILABLE AT: Three Cooper Plaza, Cherry Hill, Voorhees
Breast Ultrasound — an imaging method in which high-frequency sound waves are used to look inside the breast. A handheld instrument placed on the skin transmits the sound waves through the breast. Echoes from the sound waves are picked up and translated by a computer into an image that is displayed on a computer screen. Breast ultrasound sometimes is used to evaluate breast problems found during a screening or diagnostic mammogram. AVAILABLE AT: Three Cooper Plaza, Voorhees
Breast MRI – uses magnetic and radio waves (instead of X-rays) to produce very detailed, cross-sectional images of the breast, usually using a contrast material (gadolinium DTPA) that is injected into a small vein in the arm before or during the exam. The contrast material improves the ability of the MRI to clearly show breast tissue details. Breast MRI generally is not recommended as a screening tool by itself; it is recommended along with a yearly mammogram for certain high-risk individuals. AVAILABLE AT: Voorhees
Breast Nuclear Medicine Studies — unlike imaging tests that are based on changes tumors cause in breast structure, nuclear scans are used to examine changes in breast tissue metabolism. Nuclear scans involve injecting small amounts of slightly radioactive substances into the breast, and using special cameras, to detect abnormalities. This procedure is not used as an initial screening test; rather, it is sometimes useful in looking at suspicious areas found by regular mammograms. AVAILABLE AT: Voorhees
