Cardiothoracic Surgery

Cooper Cardiothoracic Surgeons perform cardiovascular procedures, including coronary artery bypass (CABG), heart valve repair or replacement, and correction of other defects of the heart. These physicians also perform surgery on the major arteries, the lungs, and the esophagus. They use the latest technology, such as robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass surgery, to provide patients with safer, more effective treatments. Transmyocardial Revascularization (TMR) is available for qualified patients as part of a research protocol.

Areas of Cardiothoracic Surgery Expertise

  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Coronary artery grafting using arterial grafts
  • Valvular reconstruction and replacement
  • Resection of aortic aneurysms

Cutting-Edge Cardiothoracic Procedures

Cutting-edge cardiothoracic procedures include robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass surgery, laser transmyocardial revascularization, ventricular assist devices for end-stage heart disease, and allograph aortic surgery. Cooper was one of 12 sites that participated in clinical trials of the robotic DaVinci™ Surgical System for cardiothoracic surgery. This minimally invasive system allows surgeons to be more precise and results in less post-surgical pain and scarring, a lower risk of complications or infection, and a quicker recovery for patients. Today, Cooper cardiothoracic surgeons routinely use this system in closed chest beating-heart surgery. In patients with too much disease for bypass surgery, cardiothoracic surgeons improve blood flow through laser transmyocardial revascularization.

Traditional cardiothoracic procedures, such as on-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, coronary artery grafting using arterial grafts, valvular reconstruction and replacement, and resection of aortic aneurysms, are also available.

Medical Education and Research
As faculty members at the principal teaching hospital of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Cooper cardiothoracic surgeons are leaders in medical education and research. They participated in the clinical trials that led to FDA approval of the On-X mechanical heart valves and basic research that led to FDA approval of bio-glue, now widely used in cardiothoracic surgery. The results of their research have been published in journals such as Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
