Vascular surgeons at Cooper provide comprehensive treatment for blood vessel disorders, such as arterial disease, phlebitis, varicose veins, carotid artery disease and problems of the aorta, iliac, femoral, renal and other arteries, aneurysms, arterial occlusions, limb salvage surgery and lymphedema.
A few of the cutting-edge vascular procedures available at Cooper for the treatment of vascular discorders include: endovascular management of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins, and dialysis access management. Endovascular management of AAA, a minimally invasive procedure, is available for AAAs that meet specific criteria. In minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins, Cooper vascular surgeons use a resecting wand to remove varicose veins, with fewer and smaller incisions than traditional surgery, and better cosmetic results. Traditional vascular procedures for carotid artery disease, arteriosclerosis of the extremities, aortic aneurysm, varicose veins, dialysis access, and other conditions are also available.
As faculty members at the principal teaching hospital of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey / Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Cooper vascular surgeons are leaders in medical education and research. Their research interests include the effect of nicotine on endothiolial and vascular smooth muscle cells and carotid plaque immunohistochemical analysis and basilic vein transposition arteriovenous fistulas for long-term dialysis access. Cooper vascular surgeons are participating in the multi-center CHARISMA (Clopidogrel for high atherothrombotic risk and ischemic stabilization management and avoidance) study. The results of their research have been published in journals such as Annals of Surgery, Journal of Surgical Research, and Journal of Vascular Surgery.
