Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine

The time has passed when acupuncture and other unconventional therapies could be dismissed as exotic or as healing arts on the fringes of medical care. Instead, such unconventional treatments are improving the health and well-being of patients suffering from a wide variety of conditions. By integrating these therapies with conventional treatment, the Center for Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine at Cooper University Hospital is bringing significant – and often permanent – relief to patients throughout South Jersey at our office in Moorestown, New Jersey.

Acupuncture: A Well Established Treatment
The primary treatment offered by the Center is medical acupuncture. This form of therapy has been successfully used for over 2000 years to treat a wide variety of conditions. In fact, more people have been treated with acupuncture than all other therapies combined. A 1997 consensus panel of the National Institute of Health (NIH) endorsed acupuncture as a safe and effective method of treatment. Acupuncture can be successfully used in conjunction with conventional Western medicine, osteopathic treatment, chiropractic adjustments, and homeopathic or naturopathic prescriptions.

What to Expect from Acupuncture
Acupunture at CooperAs practiced in the United States, acupuncture involves the use of very thin, stainless steel needles – about the width of a human hair – to stimulate various parts of the body.

These needles have smooth, not hollow, points. As a result, there is little or no discomfort involved in applying the needles and practically no likelihood of bruising or irritating the skin. Only sterile, disposable needles are used by the Center’s physicians.

The effect of acupuncture is to redirect energy in the body and to stimulate the body’s internal chemicals and hormones.

The number of recommended acupuncture treatments will vary according to the patient and his/her condition. Complex or long-standing conditions sometimes necessitate one or two treatments every week for several months. Acute problems usually require fewer treatments, while health maintenance visits may total as few as four a year. In cases involving severe or chronic conditions, there may need to be a regimen of ongoing treatments to maintain well-being.

Other Unconventional Therapies
The Center also offers other types of unconventional therapies that have proven to be highly effective. These include:

  • Prolotherapy
  • Neural therapy
  • Trigger point injection therapy
  • Intramuscular stimulation (IMS)
  • Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS)
  • Osteopathic manipulation
  • Massage therapy
  • Vein Sclerotherapy
