Anesthesiology

Research

The Anesthesiology Research Program’s mission is to engage in research that will result in improved state of the art patient therapies utilizing the highest standards of biomedical ethics.  The program strives to provide a dynamic research environment with faculty involved in the conduct of both industry as well as investigator initiated research with internal and national funding in the Department of Anesthesiology.  A major academic goal of the program is to create an environment that stresses the education and training of faculty, residents, research fellows, and students with interest in basic and patient-oriented research under the guidance of experienced faculty. The program exposes the researcher to the federal guidelines and regulations governing the conduct of preclinical and clinical research while striving to prepare younger investigators for more independent work.

Program Overview

ARP is designed to provide individuals interested in medical research (faculty, residents, research fellows, graduate and undergraduate students) with the necessary skills to conduct clinical research in the Department of Anesthesiology.  ARP accomplishes its mission by receiving support from pharmaceutical industry grants, national organizations, as well as support from the Department of Anesthesiology. The research fosters interdisciplinary collaborations to ensure a comprehensive approach to research that is primarily aimed at the perioperative management of hospitalized patients. The clinical trials mainly consist of Phase II-IV studies but also include Phase I studies and laboratory investigations depending on the investigator(s) interests and expertise.

The clinical research environment offers diverse opportunities for professional growth while also providing training opportunities with requisite skills for residents, research fellows and students with interest in pursuing careers in academic research. Individuals accepted into the program will be mentored by senior faculty with focus on:

  • Fundamental knowledge in clinical research methods, study design and statistics.
  • Planning and implementation of a clinical research project.
  • Presentation of research findings at a national meeting.
  • Publication of work in a peer-reviewed journal
