Questions to Ask Your Physician Before Surgery
Included in this section are some questions you may want to ask your surgeon concerning breast cancer surgery. It is important to know all of the facts before making any decision involving surgery, so that you feel comfortable with your decision.

  • Which type of surgery do you recommend for me? Why?
  • What are the risks associated with the surgery?
  • Do I need to reserve my blood in case of severe blood lost?
  • How long is the surgery?
  • Do you recommend physical therapy after the surgery? 
  • Where will the incision be located and how much of the breast tissue will be removed? 
  • Will any lymph nodes be removed? 
  • What will my arm feel like after my lymph nodes are removed?
  • What is Lymphedema?
  • What can I do to help prevent Lymphedema?
  • Should any type of blood work, or blood pressure be taken from the same arm where the lymph nodes were removed? If the lymph nodes are removed, what special care should be taken for that arm?
  • Will I be able to have breast reconstruction if I have a mastectomy? 
  • Do you recommend breast reconstruction at the same time of the mastectomy surgery or at a later date? 
  • How many surgeries will I have to have for the breast reconstruction?
  • Will additional treatment such as radiation or chemotherapy be required following surgery? 
  • What type of follow-up care is needed?
  • How long will it be before I resume my normal activities?
