Pediatric Autism Program
The Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper provides comprehensive pediatric services for infants, children and adolescents throughout South Jersey and the Delaware Valley. The Cooper Neurologic Institute (CNI) has established the Pediatric Autism Program as a multidisciplinary treatment and research center for diagnosis and treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorders. This family centered environment has been distinguished as part of a state-recognized acute-care children’s hospital. The program is one of eight different Neurologic programs offered in the CNI.
A Team Approach to Pediatric Autism
When your child is treated at the CNI, he or she will have access to an interdisciplinary team of leading clinicians and researchers, as well as the full resources of our staff which includes board-certified neurologists, and certified pediatric nurse practitioners. Collaborative, multi-disciplinary specialty care is a core attribute of the CNI. We have access to other specialists and therapists as needed.
Evaluation and Treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorders
Our team will evaluate your child. We may do this in one in one or two visits depending on the visit type, but each evaluation includes:
- History taking
- A physical examination
- A general developmental assessment tool
- Administration of the DSM-IV criteria checklist
We may also administer other Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) specific testing tools such as the:
- Gilliam Autism Rating Scale 2
- Gilliam Asperger’s Disorder Scale
- Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers
We use the DSM IV diagnostic criteria and also gather information from parents and other sources to aid in diagnosis. We do a history, physical (developmental and neurological) exam, lab testing (metabolic and/or genetic) as indicated. We also order Neuroimaging as indicated. We diagnose autistic spectrum disorders including Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, Asperger Syndrome and Rett Syndrome.
After we have reviewed your child's developmental history and testing results and diagnosis, a member of our team will discuss the results with your family. At the end of your child's session, we will give you a list of recommendations appropriate for your child's development and discuss your child's behavioral needs. We will also provide a packet of information to help you set up appropriate services for your child.
The CNI works collaboratively with the Center for Outreach and Services for the Autism Community of New Jersey (COSAC) www.njcosac.org (now known as New Jersey Autism) to provide further parent support, education and advocacy.
