This service is one of the numerous programs that are fully integrated within the Neurological Institute, allowing seamlessly integrated and comprehensive Neurological care to take place. Our multi-disciplinary Pituitary Tumor and Neuroendocrine Program physicians are experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of pituitary disorders and include experience, board-certified physicians from neurosurgery, endocrinology, radiotherapy, neuroophthalmology, and pathology. 

Pituitary disorders can cause Cushing’s disease, acromegaly, impotence, infertility, and many other disorders of the central nervous and endocrine systems which can significantly compromise quality of life or even be life-threatening.

Early diagnosis is important in the treatment of pituitary disorders. If left untreated, some pituitary tumors can grow into macroadenomas that may compress the optic nerves, brain, and the pituitary gland itself.  This can cause loss of vision, impair brain function, and affect hormone production.  However, some pituitary disorders can be difficult to diagnose; the hormonal and neurological symptoms they cause are often confused with other disorders.

Conditions diagnosed as part of the pituitary endocrine program include a number of tumors located in the region of the pituitary gland:

  • Pituitary adenomas
    • Nonsecreting pituitary adenomas
    • Acromegaly
    • Cushing's disease
    • Prolactinoma
    • Pituitary apoplexy
  • Rathke's cleft cysts
  • Other suprasellar brain tumors causing visual and/or endocrinologic impairment

Surgery is one of the treatment options for some pituitary tumors.  Cooper is a pioneer in the use of minimally invasive neuroendoscopy, an innovative treatment for some pituitary tumors and other brain disorders. Minimally invasive neuroendoscopic pituitary surgery is performed through the nose and enables most patients to go home within days of surgery.  Other treatments for pituitary disorders at Cooper include medical management, radiotherapy, and other minimally invasive surgical procedures.
