Is Quitting Smoking Your New Year’s Resolution?
We have a program proven to be successful.

CigaretteResearch shows that the average American smoker makes between six and nine attempts to quit smoking. Only five percent to 10 percent of those trying to quit succeed at any given attempt.

According to the American Cancer Society, smokers are most successful at kicking the habit when they include some means of supportive therapy, such as nicotine replacement products, medication and counseling.

Despite that fact, only one in seven current smokers report having tried that approach.

Research also shows that, for female smokers, the fear of gaining weight prevents them from trying to quit at all.

If quitting smoking is one of your New Year’s Resolutions, Cooper has a program for you. Beginning in January, there are group and individual sessions, as well as a new program designed specifically for women who want to control their weight while quitting cigarettes.

Cooper’s special evidence-based smoking cessation program is designed to help smokers quit by treating the mind-body-spirit issues involved with quitting smoking.

Presented by Cooper’s Department of Behavioral Medicine and the Cooper Cancer Institute, at locations in Voorhees and in Camden, the program focuses on the individual. It offers personalized strategies to help participants refrain from smoking, as well as ways to increase their confidence in never smoking again.

Feel Great, Look Great: Helping Women
Quit Smoking Without Gaining Weight

Research shows that one of the main reasons women don’t want to quit smoking is because they are afraid of gaining weight. Because weight concerns are important to many women, Cooper has developed a program that helps women quit smoking while also learning to manage their weight effectively.

Starting in January 2008, the "Feel Great, Look Great" program at Cooper will provide a six-week group or individual sessions geared toward helping women quit smoking for good, while learning how to manage their weight successfully.

For class dates, locations and individual appointments, call toll-free: 1-877-662-CARE (1-877-662-2273)

The cost is $30 for the six-week program ($5 per session). If you cannot afford the fee, call us and we can make other arrangements. Our services are open to the community. You do not have to be a Cooper patient to participate.

Cooper’s staff of licensed clinical psychologists, along with doctoral students trained in health promotion and lifestyle changes, have designed the program using proven therapeutic tools and techniques.

The Smoking Cessation Program at Cooper is based on research that has demonstrated that counseling in combination with medication prescribed by your physician and Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) can be the most effective intervention to help people quit smoking.

While NRT is used to decrease the physical withdrawal that smokers find so uncomfortable and so often causes them to go back to smoking, Cooper’s program does not require patients to use it.

The counseling provides confidence-building strategies to help smokers break the psychological addiction of smoking cigarettes, which sometimes can be much more difficult to overcome than the physical addition.

The special program designed exclusively for women will be offered at Cooper for Women, in Voorhees, New Jersey.  Called “Feel Great, Look Great,” the program combines weight-management strategies with smoking cessation therapy. This is in response to research that shows that one of the main reasons women don’t try to quit smoking is the fear of gaining weight. (See sidebar enrollment details.)

For both men and women who want to quit, Cooper’s Smoking Cessation Program, sponsored by the Cooper Cancer Institute, offers the choice of group treatment or individual therapy. Whether enrolled in group classes or private sessions, participants will meet with a trained counselor once a week for six weeks. The one-hour meetings will be from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Participants can choose one of two program locations: Cooper Cancer Institute, 900 Centennial Boulevard, Voorhees, NJ 08043; or Cooper University Hospital, One Cooper Plaza, Camden, NJ 08103.

Cost for Cooper’s Smoking Cessation Program is $30 for the six-week series ($5 per session). For those who can’t afford the fee, help with the cost is available. No one will be denied access to the program based on inability to pay. However, NRT and medications, if used, are the patient’s responsibility and are not provided as part of the program.

Registration for Cooper’s Smoking Cessation Program is required. To register, or to learn more about the program, call (856) 673-4254 for the program in Voorhees, or (856) 757-7736 for the program in Camden.

Remember: Don’t put it off any longer. Start planning your quit date now.
