Emergency Medicine Residency Program

From the Chief Residents

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Cooper Emergency Medicine Program! From acute myocardial infarctions, to septic shock, to multi-system trauma, we ensure the variety of patient experiences here at Cooper will provide you with everything you need to become a well-rounded emergency medicine physician.

Located in Camden, New Jersey, directly across the river from Philadelphia, we are an inner city hospital that caters to a wide diversity of patients with a high acuity of illness, making time spent in our emergency department invaluable. The faculty here at Cooper is exceptional, and the main focus is teaching and the professional development of our residents, through both bedside teaching and didactic sessions. The Department Chair, Dr. Michael Chansky, is the only academic chair from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School based here in Camden. As a result, our department is well respected throughout the hospital and our relationships with in house staff are well developed.

Aside from our ED experience, we are afforded multiple educational opportunities outside the department. Cooper is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in South Jersey which serves a population of well over 2 million people. As a result, we care for a multitude of traumatic injuries, both blunt and penetrating, from all around the state. With world-renowned critical care physicians, Cooper has also become a center of excellence for critical care where cutting edge practice is implemented everyday including implementation of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign. A separate pediatric emergencydepartment also enables us to see very sick infants and children under the direct guidance of pediatric emergency medicine trained physicians.

While we work very hard in the emergency department, we also take time out to have fun as well. We pride ourselves in the tight-knit community we have formed at Cooper. We will routinely socialize outside of the hospital not only with ourselves, but also with our attendings. Some examples of our activities include going to Philadelphia sporting events, surfing at the Jersey shore, nights out in the city, barbecues, and much, much more.

We understand that selecting the right residency is a difficult decision. If you are looking for an inner city hospital close to a major metropolitan area, where you can care for a wide variety of sick patients while developing a close relationship with your fellow residents, nurses and faculty, then Cooper is the right choice for you. Feel free to contact us with any questions. We will be happy to show you around. Take care and good luck.

Sincerely,
