Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Cooper University Hospital–University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Camden offers a unique academic university hospital experience.

Cooper University Hospital and Rowan University have signed an agreement to form Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, a new four-year allopathic medical school in Camden, NJ.  The first students will start in September 2012.  For more information, check out the Cooper Medical School webpage.

The medical residency program currently consists of 54 residents. There are 22 PGY-1 positions: 6 of these are preliminary, for residents planning on entering other fields, and 16 are three-year positions. The match numbers for these programs are: Preliminary, 138015; Categorical, 138016.

We are a core clinical campus of the UMDNJ–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and students are actively involved in the program. We have an active fellowship program, with ten ACGME–approved fellowships, including cardiology, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, infectious diseases, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, rheumatology, nephrology, pulmonary/critical care medicine and critical care medicine.

Each general medicine team consists of a hospitalist attending, a junior or senior resident, an intern, and several medical students. We have a rolling admissions system and adhere strictly to ACGME rules on caps for the number of patients covered by interns and residents. House officers have primary care responsibility; attendings serve to supervise and teach.

House officers also rotate on the oncology floor, the stroke unit, the CCU and cardiology step-down unit, and the ICU and intermediate care unit. The ICU is supervised by a team of internationally known intensivists. Cooper’s new 10-story, 312,000 square-foot patient care pavilion provides state-of-the-art patient care facilities.
