We Treat Patients for the Following Neurological Problems:

- Epilepsy and neuromuscular and neurodegenerative movement disorders associated with epilepsy
- Dementia
- Brain tumors
- Mild head injury program
Stroke Program
The Stroke Program at Cooper provides care for this common and disabling condition. Acute treatments include “clot-busting” agents such as t-PA. We participate in studies of these drugs, which allows us to offer them to as many patients as possible. We are also able to deliver “clot-busters” directly to the affected blood vessels, which extends the time frame for acute treatment. We initiate intensive rehabilitation early in the hospital course, which promotes quicker recovery, and continue with outpatient follow-up for more continuity of care.
We are the center for stroke care in southern New Jersey. Dr. Thomas Mirsen, director of the stroke program, has been recognized as South Jersey’s award winning expert in the treatment of stroke and the recipient of the American Heart Association Operation Stroke Leadership award.
Headache Program
The Headache Program takes a holistic approach to the person with headache. The program applies an up-to-date understanding of biochemical and hormonal influences on headache causes and utilizes medicinal and non-medicinal treatments. Life stressor, lifestyle, and diet are evaluated. Thorough neuropsychological and neurological examinations are used in formulating patient care plans. Nurses and psychologists are available to provide education and counseling when indicated.
Epilepsy Treatment Program
The Epilepsy Treatment Program provides comprehensive evaluation of individuals who have poorly controlled epilepsy. Cooper Neurology has the region’s only epileptologist (physician specializing in the management of epilepsy), Melissa Carran, MD. This program emphasis the long term management of difficult seizure cases using available pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. Education, psychosocial counseling, stress management and social services are provided. The program is also able to offer the services of Mitra Assadi, M.D., who specializes in movement disorders associated with epilepsy.
Neuromuscular Disorders Clinic
Patients with neuromuscular disorder such as myasthenia gravis myopathy, Muscular Dystrophy, neuropathy, and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) can obtain state of the art treatment through the Neuromuscular Disorders Clinic at Cooper. A variety of contemporary diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, such as needle muscle biopsy and plasmapheresis, complement the comprehensive medical and psychosocial management available through the Neuromuscular Disorder Clinic at Cooper.
Botox (Botulinum Toxin) Program
Treatment is available for patients with disorders such as torticollis, hemifacial spasm, and blepharospasm. Individuals are thoroughly assessed prior to treatment and videotaped records are maintained throughout the course of therapy. Injections of botulinum toxin are given under continuous EMG monitoring and are repeated at intervals. The injections may provide patients with relief for up to four months.
Mild Head Injury Program
The Mild Head Injury Program provides a full spectrum of services including neuropsychological evaluation, individual and family education, psychosocial counseling, stress management, and relaxation training.
Neuropsychology Laboratory
The Neuropsychology Laboratory provides a variety of neuropsychological services for adults and children. Comprehensive and screening evaluations are available for patients with traumatic brain injury, developmental or dementing diseases, focal brain injury from stroke or tumor, and other neurological and/or behavior problems. Test results provide a useful outline of an individual’s specific cognitive strengths and weaknesses. This information can assist in diagnosis and contribute to the accuracy of early treatment interventions and to a realistic prognosis.
