Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Helping Patients Function Better
Physiatrists place emphasis on quality of lifePhysiatrists are physicians who specialize in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). They are concerned with all major systems of the body and provide treatment for many different types of conditions. Physiatrists place heavy emphasis on improving the quality of life of their patients by restoring or maximizing function through non-surgical means. They also treat patients of all ages, ranging from pediatric to geriatric.

Cooper’s board-certified physiatrists, supported by an outstanding staff, provide the very finest in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation services at four offices in South Jersey. To become a physiatrist, individuals must undergo four years of successful graduate medical education plus an additional four years of successful postdoctoral residency training. Physicians in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation may also choose to specialize in treating specific types of conditions.

The Cooper staff also includes an experienced and dedicated group of physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and rehabilitation aides.

Cooper offers an outstanding Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) program for the treatment of acute and chronic medical problems, musculoskeletal disorders, and severe disabilities. Among the many conditions treated by Cooper physiatrists are the following:

    • Pain: Arthritis, back, neck, pregnancy-related, chronic (fibromyalgia, myofacial, etc.), and tendonitis.

    • Rehabilitation: Stroke, amputations / prosthetics, cancer, geriatric, hip replacement, and pediatric.
    • Other: Muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, birth defects, spasticity, osteoporosis, and post-polio syndrome.

State-of-the-Art Diagnosis
Cooper physiatrists have the special experience and expertise necessary to diagnose conditions that cause pain, weakness, and numbness. In addition to the diagnostic tools used by other physicians, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation staff utilizes special electrodiagnostic techniques such as electromography (EMG), nerve conduction studies, and somatosensory evoked potentials.

Goal-Directed Treatment
Physical medicineAfter carefully determining each patient’s condition and specific needs, Cooper physiatrists develop a comprehensive, goal-directed plan of treatment for that individual. This is done in close consultation with the primary care physician. Cooper uses a team approach to implement a non-surgical regimen to restore maximum possible function to the patient. In addition to Cooper physiatrists, this usually involves other Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department professionals such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, and / or rehabilitation aides.

Among the treatment options available are therapeutic exercise, heat and cold therapy, manual medicine, biofeedback, Botox injections for spasticity, physical therapy, prescription medication, and injection techniques. Assistive devices such as braces and artificial limbs are also available.

Improved Quality of Life
Cooper is proud to be southern New Jersey’s foremost center for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). With four convenient locations throughout South Jersey, an expert staff, exceptional diagnostic capabilities, and the very latest in treatment options assure the best possible help for patients of all ages. Whether it is a young adult suffering from MS…a construction worker with a back injury…or a senior recovering from a broken hip, Cooper seeks to maximize the patient’s ability to function while improving his or her independence and quality of life.
