Cardiothoracic Surgery
Cooper Cardiothoracic Surgeons perform cardiovascular procedures, including coronary artery bypass (CABG), heart valve repair or replacement, and correction of other defects of the heart. These physicians also perform surgery on the major arteries, the lungs, and the esophagus.
Cooper cardiothoracic surgery is the most advanced provider of cardiac and thoracic surgical services in southern New Jersey, offering superior care with unique advantages for the patient and the referring physician:
- Nationally recognized surgical experts.
The Cooper cardiothoracic team of surgeons offer a level of clinical expertise that is unmatched in the region. Our program has been recognized as among the top 14 percent in the nation by The Society for Thoracic Surgeons. The “Three Star” rating that Cooper received places it in the highest quality tier of The Society for Thoracic Surgeons comprehensive rating system. This system compares the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. All aspects of quality care in cardiothoracic surgery were measured including compliance with recommended medical practices, prompt delivery of time-critical treatment, availability of resources, staff performance and patient outcomes.
- State-of-the-art hospital facilities.
The new Cooper University Hospital patient care Pavilion features a new 30 bed medical-surgical intensive care unit, and state-of-the-art cardiac surgical suites.
- Superior patient outcomes. Cooper cardiothoracic surgery patient outcomes far exceed the national averages for cardiac surgery.
- Innovative treatment options. Cooper cardiothoracic surgeons perform many procedures off-pump, minimally invasive, or with robotic assistance, developing an individualized surgical plan of care that minimizes recovery time and complications.
- Advanced transfer services for cardiac emergencies. Cooper University Hospital offers unmatched access to emergent cardiac surgery. The Cooper Transfer System, COTS, provides 24/7 air or land transfer of seriously ill cardiac patients from over 20 community hospitals in the Delaware Valley.

Cutting-Edge Cardiothoracic Procedures
Cutting-edge cardiothoracic procedures include robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass surgery, laser transmyocardial revascularization, ventricular assist devices for end-stage heart disease, and allograph aortic surgery. Cooper was one of 12 sites that participated in clinical trials of the robotic DaVinci™ Surgical System for cardiothoracic surgery. This minimally invasive system allows surgeons to be more precise and results in less post-surgical pain and scarring, a lower risk of complications or infection, and a quicker recovery for patients. Today, Cooper cardiothoracic surgeons routinely use this system in closed chest beating-heart surgery. In patients with too much disease for bypass surgery, cardiothoracic surgeons improve blood flow through laser transmyocardial revascularization.
Traditional cardiothoracic procedures, such as on-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, coronary artery grafting using arterial grafts, valvular reconstruction and replacement, and resection of aortic aneurysms, are also available.
