A cancer diagnosis during pregnancy presents a rare and complex challenge – one that many oncologists and obstetricians may encounter perhaps only two or three times in their entire careers. Because of this, critical questions often go unanswered.
The Cancer and Pregnancy Registry at Cooper, led by Dr. Elyce Cardonick, a maternal-Fetal medicine physician, aims to change that. By collecting and studying real-world experiences, the registry is building a comprehensive database that helps physicians better understand how cancer treatment during pregnancy affects both mother and baby and how pregnancy may influence the course of certain cancers.
Information is gathered from various hospitals into a single database and is kept strictly confidential.
Dr. Cardonick began the registry to address a critical gap in medical knowledge. The data collected includes the diagnosis, treatment plans, and outcomes of women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy. In some cases, women have safety received chemotherapy during pregnancy and gone on to deliver healthy babies.
Dr. Cardonick also maintains a separate database for women who become pregnant after a previous cancer diagnosis or treatment. Both registries follow the health of mothers and their children yearly in cooperation with the patient’s oncologist, pediatrician, and obstetrician.
Participation is voluntary, and even if you have already delivered your baby – or know someone who has – it may not be too late to contribute valuation information to the registry.
Dr. Cardonick is available for consultation regarding cancer and pregnancy care.
