Cooper University Health Care is warning patients about a nationwide phishing scam involving fraudulent emails and text messages that appear to come from MyChart.

These messages may:

  • Offer a free “MyChart Medicare Kit,” “Medicare Health Kit,” or “Senior Health Package”
  • Claim that test results, an appointment update, a bill, or a secure message are waiting
  • Ask you to click a link and sign in to MyChart
  • Direct you to a website that looks like MyChart but is not legitimate
  • Request your MyChart username, password, verification code, personal information, Medicare information, or payment details
  • Ask you to pay a shipping fee to receive a supposedly free kit

These messages are scams. MyChart does not offer giveaways, Medicare kits, prizes, or free health packages. The messages are not being sent by Cooper University Health Care, MyCooper, MyChart, or Epic, the company that provides MyChart. There is no indication that this scam is the result of a security breach involving MyChart.

What You Should Do

If you receive a suspicious message:

  • Do not click any links or buttons, including an “unsubscribe” link.
  • Do not open attachments.
  • Do not reply to or forward the message.
  • Do not provide your username, password, verification code, Medicare number, Social Security number, credit card information, or other personal information.
  • Mark the message as junk or phishing, and then delete it.
  • Access your account only through the official MyCooper app or by visiting Cooper’s MyChart website directly. Do not use a link in an unexpected email or text.

Cooper University Health Care and MyChart will never ask you to provide your MyChart/MyCooper password or verification code by phone, email, or text message. You should enter this information only when signing in through Cooper’s official MyChart (MyCooper) website or app.

How to Recognize a Scam

Watch for these warning signs:

  • An unfamiliar or unusual sender address
  • A website address with misspellings, extra words, or an unfamiliar domain
  • An unsolicited offer for a free product, prize, kit, or reward
  • Requests for payment or a “small shipping fee” to receive a free item
  • Messages that pressure you to act immediately
  • Spelling or grammar errors
  • Requests for sensitive personal, financial, insurance, or account information
  • Instructions to press keyboard shortcuts, run a command, download a program, or bypass a computer security warning

MyChart/MyCooper will never ask you to run commands on your computer to verify, fix, or unlock your account. A website should not ask you to press keyboard shortcuts to prove that you are human.

If You Clicked a Suspicious Link

Take the following steps:

  • If you clicked a link but did not enter any information: Close the page. Do not return to it.
  • If you entered your MyChart/MyCooper password: Change your password immediately by accessing MyChart through Cooper’s official MyCooper website or app.
  • If you provided credit or debit card information: Contact your bank or card issuer immediately, report the information as compromised, and request a replacement card.
  • If you provided personal, Medicare, insurance, or financial information: Monitor your accounts and contact the appropriate organization using a verified phone number.
  • If you downloaded a file, ran a program, or followed keyboard instructions: Disconnect the device from the internet and have it examined by a qualified technology professional before using it to access personal, financial, health, or work information.

Scammers may capture information as soon as it is entered on a fraudulent form, even if you do not submit the form or complete a payment.

Not Sure Whether a Message Is Real?

  • Open the official MyCooper app directly.
  • Type Cooper’s official MyCooper address into your browser.
  • Contact your Cooper physician or provider’s office using a phone number you already have or one listed on Cooper’s official website: https://my.cooperhealth.org.
