Cancer and its treatment may leave you with debilitating side effects, compromising your function and quality of life. Research shows that physical therapy during and after cancer treatment can help speed recovery, restore strength, reduce fatigue, and lower the risk of complications.

Addressing the Side Effects of Cancer and Cancer Treatment

If you are a cancer survivor, currently undergoing treatment, or have completed treatment, you may experience a number of issues that we can help improve through physical therapy, including:

• Pain.
• Decreased muscle strength.
• Decreased bone density.
• Peripheral neuropathy related to chemotherapy.
• Fatigue/endurance.
• Balance/gait problems.
• Lymphedema or swelling disorders.
• Difficulty walking.
• Loss of normal function.
• Formation of scar tissue.
• Postural changes.
• Muscle imbalances.

Compassionate, One-on-One Care

Our specially trained physical therapists lead the Cancer Survivors Physical Rehabilitation Program. Our physical therapists can help maximize your strength and function through hands-on therapy, education, and exercise to:

• Increase mobility.
• Decrease pain.
• Restore normal function.
• Regain strength and balance.
• Increase aerobic capacity and endurance.
• Lower the risk for lymphedema.

The surgical removal of lymph nodes and/or radiation therapy in some regions of the body can adversely affect the flow of lymphatic fluid, causing swelling called lymphedema. This swelling may occur in any body region where fluid backs up. The best way to manage lymphedema is to prevent it. Our program will teach you the signs of lymphedema and ways to reduce your risk for developing it. We are also certified lymphedema therapists and can assist you should swelling occur.

Cooper physical therapists work with you one-on-one to develop a rehabilitation program tailored just for you. Based on your needs and goals, your rehabilitation program may include:

• Hands-on therapy.
• A structured exercise program.
• Aerobic equipment.
• Weight (isotonic) machines, resistive bands and free weights.
• A core stabilization program.
• Education on ways to lower the risk for lymphedema when appropriate.
• Instruction in a home exercise and self-care program.

Insurance Coverage

Most types of insurance cover cancer rehabilitation services.
