The emergency department (ED) at Cooper University Hospital provides treatment to patients with a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries, some of which may be life-threatening and requiring immediate attention. With an annual census of approximately 53,000 patients, of which 26% are pediatric, our ED is one of the busiest in the state. In addition, over 20% of ED patients are triaged as a level 1 or 2 and approximately 25% are admitted to the hospital, making our emergency department acuity high relative to other sites.
Our emergency department provides patients with 24/7 access to specialists in cardiology, surgery, orthopaedics, otolaryngology, opthalmology, urology and pediatrics in addition to social service assistance, lab services, medical imaging and cardiopulmonary services.
The physicians who staff The Children's Regional Hospital Emergency Room are board certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and thereby have the special training and experience to care for the specific needs of children who require emergency care. Our Emergency Room is the only Emergency Room within Southern New Jersey with this special expertise.
As one of only three level one trauma centers designated by the New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services, we are uniquely equipped to handle the most serious cases. A level one center is the highest designation a hospital can receive. With over 2,200 trauma visits annually, Cooper has the busiest Level one trauma center in the state. These statistics do not include the trauma patients triaged to the ED, many of which have significant traumatic injuries.
