At MD Anderson Cooper women have access to a full range of cancer care including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, reconstructive/ plastic surgery, genetic counseling and testing, post-surgical rehabilitation and lymphedema prevention and treatment, as well as access to important clinical research trials. Behavioral medicine, complementary medicine therapies and other support services are also available to assist women and their families in coping with their cancer.
Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis
Thanks to advances in screening, many breast cancers are being caught at the earliest, most treatable stages and improving breast cancer survival.
Research shows that where you get your mammogram makes a difference and that a mammogram is only as good as the radiologist who reads it. Cooper Breast Imaging Center physicians and technicians are leading the way in using advanced breast imaging technologies for the most accurate breast screening and diagnostic services.
Cooper’s Breast Imaging Centers have been designated Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. The accreditation shows that the Cooper’s Breast Imaging Centers meet the highest standards. A Center of Excellence designation is only awarded to breast imaging centers that have demonstrated excellence in mammography, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsy and stereotactic breast biopsy. Additionally, all of our technologists are mammography certified by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists.

A Team Approach to Breast Cancer Care
When faced with a diagnosis of breast cancer, it’s important to choose a care team that delivers outstanding, patient-focused care, in a comfortable environment, with compassion and confidence. At MD Anderson Cooper, each breast cancer patient is under the care of an entire team of breast cancer specialists. This team includes breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, reconstructive surgeons, pathologists and radiologists, as well as nurses, technicians, social workers and other support staff. An important member of the group is the nurse navigator. She facilitates care, educates newly diagnosed patients about treatment options, and serves as liaison between doctors and patients.
Specific treatment recommendations depend on the particulars of each case and on a thorough assessment of the patient’s condition. Treatment options include chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiation therapy, surgery or a combination of these. In cases where a mastectomy is necessary, breast reconstruction, physical therapy and positive emotional support assist the patient help patients achieve a more complete recovery.

Cancer Genetics Program
Some families have a hereditary, or genetic, predisposition that can greatly increase their chances of developing cancer. Identifying these families and educating them about available screening, risk reduction and prevention options can significantly reduce their risk for some types of cancer.
Cooper’s Cancer Genetics Program provides risk assessment and genetic counseling; recommendations on screening, risk reduction measures and prevention options; genetic testing; and long-term follow-up to people at high risk for, or who have been diagnosed with, cancer. Our team helps patients understand what it means for themselves and their families, and supports and educates patients and their families through their visits.
Staffed by trained genetics counselors and physicians from multiple disciplines, this program helps the patient and family to be proactive with their health.
