Cooper Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Patient, Family, and Caregiver Support Program

Exceptional Care for Exceptional Patients

Cooper University Health Care understands that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and neurodevelopmental disorders may experience the world in unique ways. That’s why we are committed to delivering compassionate, individualized care in an environment that minimizes stress and promotes comfort.

Our expert team includes primary care and specialty physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, therapists, and support staff who work together to ensure every patient receives thoughtful, personalized support.

We understand that a hospital visit can be particularly stressful and overwhelming for someone with an intellectual or developmental disability. Our team takes extra steps to create a more positive experience, including:

  • Identifying special needs in advance of the patient’s visit
  • Creating a customized care plan for each patient
  • Offering developmentally appropriate explanations about the patient’s condition and what to expect during the visit
  • Providing sensory spaces and items that promote a soothing environment
  • Supporting parents and caregivers with spaces to rest and recharge.

Caring Professionals

Cooper’s care teams have extensive experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings to support people with IDD across a range of health needs. Read more about our experts in each specialty here.

Sensory-Friendly Care Spaces
The hospital experience can be overwhelming – especially for patients with sensory sensitivities. Cooper has created multisensory rooms in key areas throughout its Camden campus:

  • Pediatric Emergency Department
  • Radiology Department at Cooper University Hospital
  • Pediatrics office in the Sheridan Pavilion

These calming spaces are designed with special lighting, colors, and features to help patients feel calm during their visit so they can better interact with their care team. Additional sensory tools such as weighted blankets, noise-canceling headphones, and fidget toys are also available.

Cooper has also introduced mobile sensory units equipped with a variety of soothing tools that can be brought directly to exam rooms, patient rooms, or testing areas throughout the hospital and outpatient locations. This flexibility ensures we can meet patients where they are and help reduce stress, anxiety, and agitation in real time so they can access their medical care and their family can feel more comfortable.
