Long COVID is a name for the lingering health effects that some people experience after having had COVID-19. Patients with long COVID, also called long-haul COVID or post-acute COVID, experience a range of ongoing health conditions several weeks after being infected. It is a challenging disease because it may overlap with other complications of acute COVID-19, thus making it a difficult to define.
Prolonged symptoms are common with those who have had a mild case of COVID-19 that did not require a hospitalization.
Symptoms of Long COVID
Patient with long COVID have experienced one or several of these persistent symptoms after six weeks of their initial infection:
- fast-beating heart or pounding heart (heart palpitations)
- severe fatigue
- headaches
- difficulty thinking or concentrating (brain fog)
- difficulty sleeping
- anxiety
- loss of smell or change in smell or taste
- joint pain
- hair loss
It Takes a Multidisciplinary Team to Care for Patients With Long COVID
As an academic health system, Cooper is uniquely equipped to treat patients experiencing symptoms of long COVID. Based on symptoms and severity, patients may be seen by providers from one or more of the following specialties:
- Cardiology
- ENT
- Neurology
- Psychiatry
- Pulmonary medicine
- Rheumatology
Patients may also need additional services including:
- Pharmacy
- Physical therapy
- Social work
Continuing the Expert Care
Cooper is on the forefront of COVID-19 treatment and recovery. The Long COVID Treatment Program is our commitment to fighting COVID-19 and providing care to the community.
An initial visit will include a review of symptoms, tests, and previously completed treatments. In addition, we will assess behavioral health needs, quality of life, and impact on work and family. Recommendations for further evaluation and/or referral to relevant specialty care will be provided.
