Level 1 Trauma Center

Where you go for care makes a difference.

The Trauma Center at Cooper University Hospital was established in 1982 and is one of only three New Jersey State-Designated Level I Trauma Centers verified by the American College of Surgeons, the highest national recognition possible.

Cooper serves as the regional Trauma Center for southern New Jersey including Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Mercer, Ocean and Salem counties and acts as a resource for the Level II Trauma Centers in our region.

A Level I Trauma Center cares for severely injured patients involved in motor vehicle crashes, falls, industrial accidents and acts of violence. Specially trained physicians and surgeons focus on the care of the trauma patient.

Tips to Avoid Preventable Trauma Injuries

Trauma is a leading cause of death and disability in all age groups and the cost of trauma care can be staggering.  Many traumas can be avoided by taking some precautions.

  • Falls are one of the leading causes for admissions into a trauma center and are the leading cause of trauma deaths and injuries for almost all age groups. Falls can happen during recreational activities, sporting events, work-related activities, in the home, or as a normal part of aging.
  • One of the other leading causes of traumatic injury, are motor vehicle crashes. When riding in a motor vehicle, make sure the driver and all passengers always were a seatbelt, even for short trips.  For children in the car make sure they are properly restrained. Even minor accidents can result in serious injury or death.
  • Pedestrian-motor vehicle accidents are also a leading cause of traumatic injuries.  To avoid becoming a victim, always follow posted safety signs.  Only cross the street at designated corners and in accordance with the lights.

Following these tips can significantly reduce your risk of ending up in an emergency room or trauma center.
