What is PVD?

Peripheral vascular disease, or PVD, is a common, sometimes silent and dangerous condition that affects the blood vessels outside of the heart and brain. PVD is associated with poor circulation or “hardening of the arteries” and can lead to a significant increased risk of stroke or heart attack.

The most common symptom of PVD in the legs is pain that comes and goes in one or both calves, thighs, or hips. The pain, called intermittent claudication, usually occurs while you are walking or climbing stairs and stops when you rest.

Other symptoms of PVD may include:

  • Buttock pain
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs
  • Burning or aching pain in the feet or toes while resting
