About Me

Dr. Steven Bonawitz is Head of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Cooper University Health Care. His areas of clinical expertise include general plastic or reconstructive surgery and microvascular surgery, including free flap breast reconstruction after breast cancer, breast reduction and cosmetic surgery of the breast.

His clinical interests also include craniomaxillofacial surgery, head and neck reconstruction after cancer, and general cosmetic surgery. Dr. Bonawitz specializes in treating women who have had problems or unsatisfactory results after past breast reconstruction or who were never offered breast reconstruction during their breast cancer treatment.

Dr. Bonawitz also has an adjunct appointment with the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he is involved with the vascularized composite allotransplantation program.  Prior to his faculty appointment at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Bonawitz was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburg Medical Center, in Pittsburg, PA. 

Dr. Bonawitz earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University. He completed a residency in general surgery at Western Pennsylvania and a residency in plastic surgery at University of Rochester Medical Center. He performed a fellowship in craniofacial surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Bonawitz's research interests include robotic-assisted head and neck reconstruction, or transoral robotic-assisted robotic surgery (TORS), which uses a robotic surgical system to remove mouth and throat tumors through the mouth.

Dr. Bonawitz is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons; the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery; the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgery; the American Society for Reconstructive Transplantation; and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, where he is serving on numerous committees, including Government Affairs, Health Policy and the Council on States Affairs.
