Extern and Graduate Nurse Programs

Cooper offers two unique opportunities for nursing students to explore professional nursing practice with the support of our world-class team.

Nurse Extern

The Nurse Extern Program is a 6-week, full-time (36 hours per week) immersive summer experience for motivated junior and senior nursing students to further their exposure to clinical nursing practice. As a nurse extern, you will:

  • Provide direct patient care with an experienced RN in a welcoming learning environment
  • Sharpen assessment and critical thinking skills
  • Experience the fast-paced hospital environment of a Level I Trauma and Comprehensive Stroke Center
  • Receive potential employment opportunities as a critical care tech at program completion

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Currently entering junior or senior year of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification
  • Minimum GPA 3.0

This program runs annually from June to July. Applications are typically available in January.

Graduate Nurse

The Graduate Nurse Program provides shadowing and hands-on experiences for recent nursing school graduates prior to taking the NCLEX examination. As a graduate nurse, you will:

  • Assist RN preceptor with assessment, planning, intervention, and education of patients
  • Sharpen assessment and critical thinking skills
  • Experience the fast-paced hospital environment of a Level I Trauma and Comprehensive Stroke Center
  • Feel confident bridging the gap from student to professional

Eligibility Requirements

  • Recent graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Eligible for NCLEX examination
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification
  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Two clinical references
